Methadone is an FDA-approved medication used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) as a medication-assisted treatment (MAT). When taken as prescribed, methadone is safe and effective. As with all medications used in MAT, methadone should be prescribed as part of a whole-person approach that includes counseling and other behavioral therapies.
